STRATPRO’s Eddy Current testing service is a precise inspection of the internal conditions of your air-conditionig and refrigeration equipment’s heat exchanger tubes. These tests help identify minor tube problems and their causes before they lead to serious damage. The process involves sending an inspection probe into the heat exchanger tube, the probe creates a magnetic field, which causes electrical disturbances in the tube, called eddy currents. Any tube defects alter the shape of the eddy current field and show up on a plotting scope attached to the probe. Our certified technicians analyze this data to identify pits, cracks, gouges, bulges, worn areas and other tube defects. We then provide you with a detailed report including evaluation data, analysis of the causes of any problems and recommendation for corrective action and long range service solutions. Eddy current test results can also be compared from year to year to help determine rates of tube deterioration for effective predictive and preventive maintenance.

Condensers and even cooling towers require descaling maintenance due to the harsh mineral deposits such as calcium, lime, mud and rust that rob heat transfer efficiency. For instance, most major manufacturers of condenser equipment generally design condensers to operate with a maximum “thermal resistance” or “fouling factor” of 0.0005 inches of buildup. As a result, with only 0.0360 inches (about 1/32”) of deposit corresponds to an increase in energy costs of over 30%. Our technical team can conduct tests to determine the type of cleaning required and suggest the right type of cleaning such as chemical cleaning or brushing depending on the type of scale formation in the heat exchanger.
